UON Recognised at BHP’s HSEC Awards

Jul 31, 2018

Each year BHP hosts the WA Iron Ore Contractor HSEC Awards to acknowledge their contracting partners for excellence and improvements focusing on health, safety and community-related outcomes.

This year UON was selected as a finalist for multiple categories and attended the awards ceremony which was hosted in Port Hedland by the Port and Rail Leadership Team. The event was attended by BHP WAIO President Edgar Basto, the BHP Asset Leadership Team, and other senior personnel from across the WAIO business.

On the night, UON was honoured to receive two awards. Our first award and recognition were in the Health category for our Health and Wellbeing Program. This program focuses on achieving improvements in the modifiable lifestyle risk factors such as physical inactivity, poor nutrition while also increasing awareness in the key aspects of general wellbeing and resilience.

Some key initiatives that make up this program include the Valetudo Health Corporate Training Sessions, Fruit at Work, the UON Family Day, upgraded UON facilities, and engagement with BSS psychology and their EAP services. These initiatives have had a direct and positive impact on our employees, and also a progressive flow on effects to workers’ interactions with each other, their families, and the community in general.

Our second award and recognition were in the Environment category for our innovative GMC Variable Speed Drive Technology. This technology was developed by UON and successfully reduces carbon emissions of our generator sets while introducing fuel savings. This technology has been adopted by many of our clients further helping to reduce our environmental impact.

UON would like to congratulate all the other contractors who were finalists and received awards on the night for their efforts. We have had a partnership with BHP since 2008 and would like to thank them for their continued support and for hosting such a successful event.
