Summary

UON upgrades the potable water transfer system and dewatering capabilities at existing mine sites in Yandicoogina, Western Australia.

Background Information

The Yandi iron ore site at Central Junction needed a new potable water supply; pit progression would eliminate four of the existing bores affecting the supply of potable water to the mine and village. UON was contracted by Hamersley Iron Ltd. to provide 3 replacement potable water production bores.

The Junction S.E pit at Yandi needed dewatering bores to be installed; expansion of the site meant it would be mining below the water table within a year. UON was contracted by Hamersley Iron Ltd. to provide four new dewatering bores. (Due to the geology of the water table, it was only possible to use in-pit bores. The mine uses drill and blast techniques, so custom designed portable in-pit bores had to be used to ensure they could be removed quickly to avoid damage before scheduled blasting).

Key Success

A key success of Junction Central and SE, Yandicoogina is in the ability to provide our client with the complete solution (design, construct, install and maintain). UON (a) designed purpose built dewatering packages for the client, to enable quick removal of in-pit bores and durable equipment built to withstand the harsh environment (b) constructed the solution using integrated world class components which can be added or removed to meet the projects demands (c) managed implementation in coordination with mining operations to minimise downtime of the water supply and to facilitate works being carried out in the mining area (d) provided the client with an internal SCADA monitoring system to efficiently maintain the site. By choosing UON to design, construct, install and maintain the Yandi mine sites, Hamersley Iron Ltd. minimised down-time and made an investment in its future productivity.

Equipment

  • Supply and installation of: 6 x portable dewatering packages (Additional package added at the end of the project, therefore 7 in total). Each package consists of equipment designed for the harsh environment and to cope with being pushed and towed by heavy machinery:
    • a heavy duty generator skid with generator
    • integral fuel tank
    • internal load bank
    • a headwork skid consisting of headworks and a control panel including telemetry.
    • Bore pump and riser
  • 1 x fixed dewatering package
